Our society is constantly changing, ever more mobile and digitally connected, impacting how we live, work, and play.

Cities face the same impacts as they navigate an ocean of economic, environmental, and social challenges. Getting safely to shore requires effective infrastructure management, efficient service delivery, comprehensive analysis of massive quantities of data, and collaboration at local, regional, and national levels.

Smart Cities are at the leading edge of change. Using new technology as well as existing technology in new ways— combined with advanced data analytic tools to reach and surpass their goals—McLean County Regional Planning enhances our community’s quality of life supported by economic vitality, community engagement, and efficient, responsive government. Done well, these technologies promote jobs, education, crime reduction, better infrastructure, and ultimately a stronger, more equitable and resilient community.

During recent MCRPC long-range planning work from 2014 through 2017, smart cities elements were raised and considered, including broadband access, civic innovation, autonomous vehicles, and much more. From these discussions, our area’s need for a coordinated approach to smart city planning became clear. MCRPC is currently partnering with the municipalities and other BN Advantage partners in helping create a “smart region.” The initial phases of this planning include education and outreach efforts, such as the Community Information Forum topics on Innovation Districts and Smart Cities.
