Normal, IL –  September 19, 2018 – The Town of Normal Comprehensive Plan is drawing praise within months of its adoption.  The Plan will receive the Daniel Burnham Award for an Outstanding Comprehensive Plan from the Illinois chapter of the American Planning Association (ILAPA).  Named in honor of the iconic Chicago city planner and architect Daniel Burnham, the annual award recognizes a comprehensive plan that advances the art and science of planning.Recipients of Daniel Burnham Award for Outstanding Comprehensive Plans

The Normal Comprehensive Plan, a guide to future land use and development principles grounded in the community vision for the future, was adopted in November 2017 and will be implemented over the next twenty years, with periodic updates.  This plan calls for complete, connected, and compact development throughout the community. Deviating from past approaches where properties were segregated by land use, the Town’s plan is organized by a new framework of “Neighborhoods, Centers, and Corridors.”

Mayor Chris Koos noted that the plan sets a new standard for development in the future.  “The times are changing when it comes to the style of development and preferences of our residents.  Even the development community is changing how it does business.  The Comprehensive Plan addresses these changes head on and will provide elected officials with highly relevant guidance for years to come,” Koos said.

MCRPC Executive Director Vasudha Gadhiraju said the award is a very gratifying acknowledgement of the quality work done by the Town and MCRPC staff along with many community stakeholders. “The Plan is the result of many months of work by MCRPC and Town staff with input from hundreds of dedicated volunteers who contributed their time and expertise to help create this path to the Town’s future.  I am delighted to see this plan receive such prestigious professional recognition.”American Planning Association Illinois Chapter Conference

The award will be presented during the American Planning Association Illinois Chapter conference in Springfield, IL on September 26, 2018.
